Right now I'm sitting in the complete dark (except for the light from my laptop of course) all in an effort to at least somewhat participate in this whole lights out thingy...not sure why, but OK. And yes I know I'm probably not supposed to be using the lap top during lights out, but I didn't feel like looking for candles. When lights are out in the country on a cloudy night, it is DARK! Holy Cow...without the laptop it is like "can't see your own hand in front of your face" dark. So I read about this whole concept on this blog and figured "why not?" Which lead me to another thought I've been on for a while...going green.
See about 2 months ago I decided I would start purchasing the new energy efficient lights in an effort to do my part however small it may be. I did and we started putting them in our house as lights burn out and then the other day in the car I was listening to some news show where they were talking about these lights. Do you know you can not put these light bulbs in the regular trash when they burn out? They have mercury in them. They have to be disposed of like toxic waste...and better yet if (when) you break one you have like this whole process you have to go through to clean them up. If you don't believe me, go here. Given this bit of information someone please explain to me how saving maybe $30.00 a month is worth putting my entire families health at risk? Why would I knowingly bring something into my house that I am going to need a HazMat suit to clean up when I break it (and trust me, I will break at least one at some point in my life)!
I'm sorry if I offend anyone here, but I just don't understand the logic people use when they talk about saving the environment. Give me a break! Are we going green? Not anymore, not anytime soon. It cracks me up that everyone is so willing to shout from the rooftops how terrible aerosol cans are for global warming and how simple going green is but I never heard anyone proclaiming the potential dangers of this latest and greatest and simplest way to go green...where's the balance there?

I saw that report a while back and decided I'd do without the new lights. I'm with you - anything you have to treat as hazardous waste needent be in your home - especially with children!
